About Graeme Woodfield author of Jack Lovelock

About the Author

Doctor Graeme Woodfield has been intrigued by the life of Jack Lovelock since attending Timaru Boys' High School. There, he became aware of the esteem in which Lovelock was held. Visits to the school library where many of his athletics treasures are stored, made him wonder if all the stories told about him were true. Later on, Graeme discovered that although much had been written about Jack Lovelock the athlete, little had been focused on aspects such as his medical training and career.

After reviewing existing books, he believed it was time for a definitive biography which would help to set the record straight. Other medical specialists assisted by providing a thorough analysis of Lovelock from a physiological and psychological perspective.

Dr Graeme Woodfield is a graduate of Otago Medical School. He holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh and passed the examinations for Fellowships of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (Edinburgh) and Pathologists (Australasia). He spent six years working in developing countries.

Upon returning to New Zealand in 1976, he was appointed Medical Director of Auckland Blood Services where he worked until 1998. He is an honorary life member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Blood Transfusion. He is currently Clinical Associate Professor (Hon) at Auckland Medical School and has written many research papers.

Graeme lives on 10 acres at Kumeu, just outside Auckland, New Zealand, where he looks after 200 chestnut trees and sundry cattle. He spends his time writing, looking after an organisation that provides medical items to Third World countries and visiting India each year to help in the upgrading of blood centres in various cities. Married to Annabell for 45 years, they have four children, ten grandchildren (and still counting!).

Graeme has various other projects in the pipeline and has recently completed a biography of Lord Arthur Porritt.
